  1. GMO’s
A hot topic these days is the debate over GMO’s. Are they safe? Can they be beneficial? Are they really deadly? These are just a few of the frequently asked questions. Understanding the rise of this conflict and the context of it is essential before we discuss the issue in detail. First, it must be understood that the culture we live in is very trend oriented; and the trend right now is to do whatever is “healthy”. One clear example of this is being gluten free. Half the people who are gluten free are legitimately effected by too much gluten; the other half is enjoying the attention they get for being gluten free. Now, I’m not saying it is the same thing with GMO’s. What I am saying, is that we need to view this without speculation or exaggeration. We hear thing like, carcinogens are being sprayed on crops. This statement may be true for a specific case, but that doesn’t mean every big, industrial farm is spraying their genetically modified crops with carcinogens. Suzie Key says “There is little documented evidence that GM crops are potentially toxic” (“Genetically modified plants and human health”). Yet, people subjectively group the GM crop farmers as cancer breading killers. It is also important to point out, that genetically modified plants aren’t infused with chemicals, but rather, their genetic makeup is altered. Here in lies the problem I have with GMO’s, see God created things a certain way and when people try to change that, I have a problem with that. Though the flaw in my thinking is when one asks the question, are genetically modified plants created through God given human ingenuity?

    1. Good job joesph! A lot of people have the same question, are GM plants created through God given ingenuity, or are they out of His plan? Since there's no way of knowing, I suppose that it's all left up to our own moral compass. Though I look at it with the view that everything God has made is good, God would not create such an idea that would lead us out of health. He would not change something so beautiful He placed on this earth he created just the way He intended. But there are lots of things to take into account with this topic. -amelia(:

    3. I like your research Jo! Hope calling you Jo isn't too informal. Anyway, since you have a better chance of convincing the general public that GMO's are unhealthy, I would personally take that approach. I am particularly pleased with the fact that you haven't closed your mind by saying "WE CAN'T MESS WITH GOD'S CREATION!!!" I am pleased that you take into account that modifying the DNA of plants could have been GOD given wisdom to solve various problems.

  2. Amelia Frances Esther

Mellissa Breyers says in an article on Organic Consumers Foundation, “The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients. They cite animal studies showing organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility” this article also later states that, “Numerous health problems increased after GMOs were introduced in 1996. The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years; food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders such as autism, reproductive disorders, digestive problems, and others are on the rise” These chemicals that this generation is allowing into their bodies is horrifying. Though a million pros on this topic can be stated, we are left with this huge con and that is, the simple fact that we are slowing killing the human race. In order to care about the pros that come with this, we certainly do need to be around. So the question this world needs to ask is, are we really willing to give up our health, our future generations health in order to regulate the economy, or to have a bigger peach

  3. GM cotton
Although GM cotton can help to save the source for human, GM cotton is hurting human’s health. Make GM cotton in different kinds of using goods are fine, but GM cotton still has the risk for people to eat them. In Europe, “To date, the cultivation of GM cotton is not approved. This depends on a proposal for approval of cultivation. (GMO Compass)” Why EU doesn’t allow the GM cotton even this special cotton can help EU save the source? How people think about they eat the oil made from cotton? However, people are still fear of not only the GM cotton but also GM products. “Fear of GMOs in the food supply spurred California’s Proposition 37, the 2012 ballot initiative that would have required many such foods to be labeled (Kaplan)”. GM cotton will most used in the food area, and farmers plant GMOs because they need less chemical and improve the benefit. GM cotton is the scientific conclusion and it represents the development, but I think human needs the save a better life than to undertake the GMO tasks.

  4. Genetically Modified Maize
Genetically modified organisms, commonly known as GMO’s, are a controversial topic in the United States today. Some see them as an asset to the farming world and support the expanse of GMO’s due to the advantages they provide. Others view them as a danger to the health of human beings, wildlife, and aquatic life as well. “Unfortunately, there are no long-term studies to either prove or disprove the safety of GMOs” (Bell). Genetically modified maize is an exception—at least in Europe. It is the only GM crop that has gained acceptance for harvest by farmers. This is due to the fact that it is insect resistant and consequently saves farmers from spending thousands on chemical and biological pest control methods. It also has a herbicide tolerance i.e. it has the ability to survive and reproduce naturally after herbicide treatment. Nonetheless, it still faces criticism here in the United States. GM maize has a potential to trigger human allergies and also cross-pollinate making organic farming difficult. It could also lead to contamination of aquatic plants and wildlife by contaminating nearby streams.

    Genetically Modified Plants
In this day there are a lot of kind of Genetically Modified Plants. It is hard to ignore the fact that Genetically Modified Plants is more easy to farm and can make more products. But, it is obvious that Genetically Modified Plants are not trustful for our health, environmental and it may cause allergic reaction. For example, "By growing plants or raising livestock in environmental conditions that normally wouldn’t support them, there is the potential of irrevocably damaging that environment. This is often seen through GMO crossbreading" (HRF). Along with this example, i think that GMO might cause disruption of ecosytem then it will hard to have organic agriculture.

  8. Nowadays, the genetically modified plants have attracted a large amount of media. Transgenic (GM) plants are those that have been genetically modified using recombinant DNA technology. From the economists’ side, the genetically modified plants are good because they reduce the need for pesticide and herbicide which means it saves the money for farmers. Also, they have greater food production and nutritional content than the regular plants. For the environment, the genetically modified plants also reduce the greenhouse emissions. But every coin have two sides, their gene might transfer to the environment. Because it reduce the need for herbicide, it also reduce the weeds. The genetically modified plants have higher levels of plant estrogens than the regular plants and the scientists are not sure about whether they have had the toxins that will hurt human’s body or do they have the bad genetic effect on humans. From the information we have known, the genetically modified plants are beneficial to humans but they might have some problem we don’t know yet.

    Genetically Modified Plants
Nowadays, we are no strangers to genetically modified plants. Genetically modified plants are the plants which people use technology to transform the gene inside the plants from other plants. These plants can immune most of the pesticides so the farmers can reduce the costs. However, the genetically modified plants have its disadvantaged that cannot be ignored. In my opinion, we need get away from the genetically modified plants. “In some quarters, GM food is cited as being ‘unnatural’, although this accusation could be levelled at all of our food, which has been produced over millennia by artificial breeding” (“Genetically modified plants and human health”). First, the genetically modified plants will cause the cross contamination. “The pollen from the genetically modified plants is also contaminated. When this pollen is around other plants, even things like grass or weeds, they cross pollinate. This could develop “superweeds” that have the same resistance properties as the crops” (“Disadvantages and Advantages of Genetically Modified Crops”). Then, the genetically modified plants will cause the rise of the allergies. Moreover, although the genetically modified plants can develop its antibiotics that they can survive in poor space, their gene come into human’s body will lead to less effective antibiotics. In addition, “There has been very little testing and research done on genetically modified foods and the long term effects have not been discovered yet. This makes many people feel uneasy at the high use of these foods” (“Disadvantages and Advantages of Genetically Modified Crops”). We don’t know whether the genetically modified plants will have some problems in the future. At last, the genetically modified plants are more harm than good. People need choose to eat the genetically modified plants carefully. We need more authority to verify the safety of the genetically modified plants.

    GMO: Helpful or Hurtful?
GMO’s are defined as genetically modified organisms. This scientific method alters plants, animals and bacteria from their natural state using genetic engineering. According to an internet source answering frequently asked questions about GMO’s, “In the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food.” (gmoawareness.org) I don’t believe that GMO’s should be used in such a huge margin of America’s food products, because it has been found that they negatively impact health, the environment and farmers. In my opinion, GMO’s should not be used in produce, meat, or processed food that is being sold in America because there are more negative risks than there are benefits.

    NO GMO’s
I am a cocky son of a gun. I eat vitamins every day of my life. GMO’s cannot harm or affect me. But I know that one day I will be a father. And as a father, I could not sit down in my kitchen and watch my child consume chemicals. That’s right, you might as well call GMO’s poisono’s. “Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organs studied in animals” (Institute for Responsible Technology). There are few pros to GMO’s. For example, GMO’s have a longer shelf life and the risk for crop failure is lowered. But that does not out weight the cons to consuming GMO’s. It has been studied by scientist that GMO’s take a direct shot to damaging your health. And it is no secret that GMO’s are dangerous to the human body. More than sixty countries have put restrictions or bans on the production and sale of GMO’s. To me, there is know difference between lighting a cigarette and eating a GMO. When you do both, you are damaging your health even though you don’t have too. No GMO’s and keep our children healthy America!

    Genetically Modified Plants (GMO)

GMO is a technology that “developed plants through a process in which a copy of a desired gene or section of genetic material from one plant or organism, such as the ability to use water more efficiently, is placed in another plant. ("GMO")” There is a lot of controversy about using GMO.
There are a number of opponents who is a lot object to using GMO. The main reason is because using GMO has the possibility to affect human health negatively. For example, they said it can cause allergies or cancer when humans consume GMO crops ("Harmful Effects of the Agent").
However, advocators propose that there are multiple profits to using GMO which can positively change human society. According to the article, by using GMO, human societies can save tons of resources when they cultivate crops, such as water or pesticides (GMOs). Moreover, as GMO crops can provide more food resources instead of normal crops, it can solve the famine that happening in developing countries,
In my perspective, even though there is no scientific proof about safety of GMO, as human societies already have been relying on GMO to support each nation’s citizens’ food consumptions, when governments start banning about GMO usage, it will cause more chaos in this society. Instead of limitations, by keep tracking the GMO foods’ influence toward human health, scientist should collect all that information into a data base. As technologies always have been developed, in future, our descendants can use this scientific information to reinforce GMO technology to eliminate all those possible negative effects when they have all those required technologies.

Genetically Modified Plants (GMO) are plants that have been modified by scientists to make them bigger, better and stronger. This seems to be the motto of most Americans. Most people see a nice, big red tomato next to an organic, slightly smaller and somewhat green tomato and they of course will pick the prettier one. Little did they know that that tomato has been genetically engineered to be bigger and resist pesticides and insects. Now, just by hearing that, a genetically engineered tomato seems great right? Unfortunately, when GMO foods are given to animals, a whole new problem emerges, "In an experiment in Scotland, rats fed GM potatoes containing a gene for a protein, lectin, fared poorly and suffered internal organ damage" (American Radio Works). In humans, GMOs have been linked to an increase of allergies for people of all ages. The reason why is still unknown. Another reason why GMOs should be banned is many times, the insects or bacteria the plants are designed to combat, develop immunity to the pesticide and cause more damage. America needs to follow in the steps of the European Union, Japan and multiple South American countries and ban GMOs until further research is discovered on the risks of consuming engineered plants. The world needs to worry about the present, and future and weigh the risks before releasing potentially harmful foods to people.

  14. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are exactly what there name entitles. They are organisms and bacterias that have been stripped down to the genetic foundation in order to enhance and or alter their growth and development. In a pursuit for information on the original GMO, I came to the understanding that much like all advancements in medicine and agricultural progression, this movement started with the right motives and ideology in times that required it. “Some organisms are constantly being attacked by pests and some insects, and traditional methods of fighting them are just too costly and painful. So just like a flu shot, researchers believe the DNA from a virus can be fixed into the DNA of the crop, and make it more resistant to that virus.” (eschooltoday) This quote gives one of many practical and realistic reasons on why there was ever a need for the marriage of science and agriculture. No matter what we all want hold to as our own understanding, GMOs gave us all a better and more successful platform in the immediate necessity for human consumption and overall dietary survival in times of great economical and environmental crisis. This being said, we as a world have formed a pattern in all facets of life to turn a good thing, a pure thing, into a problematic means of controversy. There is a reason people are resulting back to organic and locally grown produce in their regular diet. It’s because we as a world began to sacrifice the balance of a necessary means to human flourishing with a unnecessary means to human connivance. So next time you want to partake in the controversy of eating something that is “modified” or “not modified”, ask yourself these questions; where is the healthy balance? Is it needed? Was it ever needed? And do I personally need it or do I not?

  15. Genetically modified plants fall under the category of genetically modified organisms, also known as GMO’s. “Genetic modification is nothing new”, human beings have modified crops in some way so that they could grow differently, in a way that would suit them best and be used to their full potential. Genetic engineering is just the most modern and precise method of designing better crops. There are over 181.5 million hectares of genetically modified plants throughout the Earth, half of which is in US soil. The main reason agriculture is leaning towards genetically modifying plants is it reduces long term damage to the Earth and it also increases the yearly yields of crops. Am I convinced? I like to look at myself as an environmentalist and am against many things such as excessive logging, littering, whaling, shark finning, any sort of thing that can potentially put the world as we know it out of balance. Although it is claimed genetically modifying crops will help reduce environmental damage, I’m still not completely sold on the fact it takes the natural goodness out of the crops. I personally do not want my future children eating corn that was grown out of test tube in some lab in some place.

  16. Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs as they're commonly referred to, are a highly debated topic in today's society. Many people strongly feel that they are dangerous and potentially harmful, but the facts show that they are actually very safe. "This tomato was engineered to produce higher levels of nutrients called anthocyanins, which have been shown to be protective against a wide variety of human diseases." (The Battelle Insider) This quote from biotechnology expert Dr. Josh Arnold, Ph. D., shows just one of the pros of GMOs. Not only do GMOs provide us with more nutritious foods, but they can reduce the use of pesticides and are among the most tested products in history, assuring that, when they are put out on the market, they are safe for consumption. When looking at the facts, it is clear to see that GMOs are a safe and smart way to go.

  17. 3C - GMOs
In the vast field of food there is a one problem that is controversial: genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The reason why this topic is controversial is because of the benefits of the economy and the farmers versus the negative affects they have on people’s safety. On one hand, they help the economy by making food cheaper as the GMOs are in a vast majority of foods. These GMOs are also easier for the farmers because they are less likely to die due to conditions on the farm. The farmers then are able to harvest more food, and the more food there is flowing into stores, the cheaper it is for the sake of competition. Yet, on the other hand, theses unnatural plants are modified in order to produce its own pesticide, and in other ways, affect our health. There was even an incident of death due to a strain of bacteria. Back in 1989, “37 people died and about 1,500 were sickened after ingesting L-tryptophan (a nutritional supplement) that was manufactured by a strain of GMO bacteria” (Lallanilla). Comparing the positives and the negatives, there isn’t a whole lot we know about GMOs, but one thing is certain; GMOs are unnatural, therefore, we are going to discover unnatural things.

Though GMO's can help increase food production, there is just to many things that can an do go wrong. GMO's have ha results of getting their consumers very sick. Some cause cancer and others allergic reaction. Consumers shouldn't have to risk their health to eat vegetable and other products just so some big companies can save some money. In America GMO's have cover 70-80% of consumers food causing prices to drop making it more tempting to buy the cheaper option. Is it worth it to poison you family just to save a few extra dollars on organic products. In the end GMOs are not worth consumers health no matter what the costs.

  19. Genetically modified plants has been going on for a long time. Whenever we breed one strong plant with another we are technically genetically modifying it. That being said, I don't think that it is okay to literally go in and change the whole "DNA" of the plant. God gave us these plants as a gift from heaven, as a form of beauty and of food, and yet we want to change this? What is wrong with us? It is wrong. It is against the very core of us, as Christians, believe.
