Nowadays, many people want to have a better baby. They want their babies smarter and look better than them. When they can’t do that only by generation, they think about the genetically modify technology. It is good that the genetically modified baby will have longer life span and they are healthier than the other babies. Though there are certainly some positive things that can be obtained from the use of genetic engineering used on unborn babies, but it is often wondered if parents will have the “right” reasons to genetically modify their baby, or if reasoning will become more superficial. The babies don’t have the chance to alter themselves. Because the genetically modified babies are smarter and look better, it will cause the social gap. These babies might think other babies are ugly and stupid. Also, this technology is not one hundred percentages safe. Compare the good fact and bad fact of the genetically modified babies, the bad fact look might be very hard to solve and nobody can tell us that will these genetically modified baby cause some new problems.

    2. I agree with your overall point, but I disagree in that there are no advantages to baby designing. How many diseases are actually fully eliminated from that individual and how can they test that with this being new scientific discovery.

    3. I dont' think people care what their baby looks like. In fact, everyone thinks that their baby is beautiful. And a lot of people know that that is the beautiful thing about having a child because it came from you. But all the other stuff was spot on. I feel like designer babies and non designer babies will hate each other in the future and there is going to be a lot of discrimination amongst both groups. Everyone needs to love everyone. You don't even have to love them, just don't hate.

    Designer Babies
At surface level, the argument over “designer babies” is relatively one sided. Those actually for genetically modified babies can be seen as the selfish, ambitious, scientific type. They will hide behind the argument that they are ridding this world of disease, when in all reality; they are enhancing physical attributes in order to produce an attractive human being. For those who do not trust in a sovereign God, this is a legitimate fear as it would produce vast competition and eliminate the gene pool. Many would argue that the practice of designing babies would destroy the desire for a unique identity and personality. Here in lies an important question we must ask, which has more power, nurture or nature? For those that believe in a sovereign God, as I do, this complicates our opinion on genetically modified babies. Nurture would say, “Just because someone is born a certain way does not mean they stay that way. Nature would say, “People carry specific characteristic and personality traits all through their life”. I don’t disagree with either. However, I would have to agree more with nurture. God can do whatever he desires; therefore it isn’t hard to believe that he would fix human error, such as designing babies, and creates a beautiful, unique individual. In summary, I am against genetically modifying babies, but I don’t think it is too hard of a task for God to fix and rise above.

    1. Very insightful Jo. On most aspects I have a similar stance. I challenge you, nonetheless, to expand your scope. I am sure you've considered the non-Biblical approach while reflecting on this issue. Since I am a follower of Christ, it is easy for me to understand what you're saying and agree with you. But for those, like you said, who don not believe in a sovereign GOD, what are they to do when a doctor asks them whether or not they would like to genetically modify their baby?

    Genetically Modified Babies
Genetically modified babies are going to be the next group of people to hate on. In the past we have denied people of all races and people of all sexualities making life difficult and dangerous for the minority. And genetically modified babies are on their way to that lifestyle. Genetically modified babies are going to cause a gap in our society. And there will be pros and cons to that. In the future there will be jobs to where you will have the advantage of getting if you are a designer baby and there will also be jobs as to where you will have a disadvantage if you are a designer baby. And the same goes to un-designed babies as well. So there will be many conflicts in our society and people will not know how to behave. There will be arguments from every side on whether to accept or discarnate the designer babies. But we are all going to have to get along anyways and keep moving forward to the next problem in mankind. I personally do not approve of designer babies but we are going to need to treat them like everyone else and love them like everyone else. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

    2. Well put my friend. I feel the same. The modern world we know, like it or not revolves around some sort of judgement, be it race, gender, religion etc... with modern society as it is, sadly there would DEFINITELY be a social gap between designer babies and natural ones.

I don’t think those Genetically Modified Babies are acceptable for now. Although those special babies represent the new technology, it’s against the natural biology. It’s unfair to both of DNA babies and designer babies: “shun genetic enhancement is that it makes no sense from a biological and developmental perspective (Krimsky).” Between the DNA babies and GM babies it is not only battle, but also will cause racism. Unfair to the DNA babies, they are just followed natural rules to born and create their life by themselves, they will think genetically modified babies does nothing, because they already have their special ability; they cannot build a mutual understanding. Unfair to the Genetically Modified Babies, they argued to be a designer baby is not their choice; it’s their parents’ choice. “Parents set their own limits for genetically engineering their baby (The Ethics of "Designer Babies").” These special babies cannot change the result, because this is the way they born. I believe nobody is really ready to accept the Genetically Modified Babies, designer babies are against babies’ future and make them become to victim of the science, also make unfairness to the normal human. But we may need more time to build the equal society for every kind of human.

    Genetically Modified Babies
We are living in one of the most rapidly changing times in history. This is due to the incredible growth in technology which has influenced the paradigm in which some view the world. The issue concerning designer babies is one of the many controversial topics that has split people around the world—researchers, scientists, and more importantly parents and parents to be— in half—some provocatively advocating it and others extremely against it. Since genetically modifying an embryo is quite expensive, most shy away from the idea and those who have the capability decide instantly or consult professionals. “But when bringing a new child into the world, society has an obligation to determine whether the technologies used to do so actually benefit or harm the infant.” Whether or not the baby grows up to be what the parent wanted is undetermined—there is no guarantee. Another perspective that hinders me from supporting the use of technologically advanced procedures to modify the genetic make-up of one’s offspring is the mere fact that I can henceforth draw a parallel to the creation of robotic equipment with those procedures. What is the difference between the most highly advanced robot one can think of and a genetically modified baby? The simple answer is that the baby is a human, it feels, grows, and will eventually learn to think on its own. To this rebuttal I have no response; perhaps my comparison is blown out of proportion. Nevertheless, with the research I have completed, the cons outweigh the pros, and as of right now, I can not support the use of this technology.

    Genetically Modified Babies
What is genetically modified baby? Genetically modified baby is a technology about the genes in human’s body. “The technique’s called “germline editing,” as in editing the germination line of traits passed down from one generation to the next” (Are You Ready for Genetically Modified Babies?). The genetically modified baby have many benefits but it also have a huge pool of disadvantages. The new gene put in baby's body can make the baby smarter than before but it also can make baby have some propensity for violence. Then, if every people choose their children to be genetically modified babies, the human gene will over into confusion. We don’t know what will happen in the third generation. Maybe the third generation will better than second generation, maybe not. In my opinion, if we are not one hundred percent sure about the genetically modified babies, we can’t put any gene technology on the human.

  12. Our species is a rather complex and intelligent one, and we as the human race, are seeming to have only scratched the surface of our mental capabilities. With our seemingly endless thirst for knowledge and understanding, geneticists have been looking at perfecting the human species for quite some time now. This leads to the matter of Genetically Modified Babies, or more commonly known as “Designer Babies”. I mean sure, the progress of our knowledge in genetics have made us wonder about the endless possibilities of being able to edit your unborn child as if out of a photo editor right before you post that perfect picture instagram. I personally am not sold on the idea of designing my future children, no matter how appealing the benefits seem, which indeed are rather great, but the risks still seem to be too risky. Am I for or against it? I personally am not sure. Who am I to say what is right or wrong people’s opinions on the matter. It’s the same argument that goes with abortion, it really comes down to the mothers, or in this case, the parents choice.

The only real flaw is found with your absence of a quote to support your stance as is needed for a three ‘C’ paragraph. Otherwise you are a great writer!

    Genetically Modified Babies
Genetically modified babies, or “Designer Babies” as they are commonly referred to, are any babies whose genetic makeup has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect, or to ensure that a particular gene is present. While genetically modified babies won’t be available or possible any time soon, they are still a hot topic and something many people are concerned about. To me, designer babies are against my ideas of what having a child looks like and is. Having a child should look like what it did in the Bible. God created birth a certain way, and I believe that is the way it should continue to happen. "Human nature itself lies on the operating table ... ready for wholesale redesign." (White 1) This quote by Michael White tells exactly what is happening today and exactly what is wrong with what is happening. Our human nature shouldn’t be laying on the operating table. If you want your child to be smarter, starting to teach them earlier would be a sensible solution, not trying to change their genetic make-up before they’re even born.

    3C’s – Genetically Modified Babies
There is a point of going too far. Changing the DNA of a plant is one thing, to help the economy and such things, but changing the DNA makeup of a human baby is something entirely different. Genetically modified babies, commonly known as designer babies, are children who have had their genes modified with other genes from a third-party that allow the babies to obtain the desired look or personality. These changes can be made to the baby’s gender, appearance, diseases, personality, and even intelligence. The question of asking if we have gone too far can be answered with a great yes. Although these modifications to a baby can help reduce the risk of diseases and negative effects, including the lifespan of the child, the parents are changing the baby entirely. These babies are not being born in a natural way, and the child will grow up the way the parent wants the child to. In several cases where the parent lives a life through their child, forcing them to be something the child does not want to be, these situations will only be escalated with the possibility of changing the child to be increasingly better at the activity. Not only could this deprive the child of what they seek, but these changes “could have unpredictable effects on future generations” and is therefore “dangerous and ethically unacceptable" (White). I feel that these changes are going to harm the genetically modified babies both in a physical sense where there are some uncalculated after affects, and also it will harm their childhood. Why would parents want their children to be a specific way? That way their child can be the best.

    Genetically Modified Babies
Some people think that there are some advantages to baby designing. It is hard to ignore the fact that there are some benefits from the baby design such as reduced risk of medical condition and increased life time. However, I believe that people should stop designing babies because human life is something that people should not manipulate. It is obvious that Genetically Modified Babies have a lot of problems such as the "Technology used is not hundred percent safe yet. It is only in the experimental stages at this point and because the technology is so new, it is unknown whether genetically modifying the babies will affect the gene pool. This could cause difficulties later on throughout the baby’s family tree (The Ethics of "Designer Babies)." According to this example there are some risks of genetically modified babies.

"Once we start going down this road, there is no coming back. It takes away the beautiful process that is a natural reproduction of everything we know" Creating another human life is one of the most beautiful gifts that our Lord has given us. Changing even the littlest part of another life is wrong of anyone to do, or even think they have the right to do so. Changing a person, without even a say, is against every human right. By genetically modifying a baby, you are essentially giving up the life that your child has been given and replacing it with another. Even the biggest of the pros are morally wrong; taking a disability or even a disease out of a life will change their life and the plan that God has in place for them (though I do know that God will shape His plan through everything, who are we to do so.) Using this to further our scientific studies, is un ethical. All of the pros stated, are thoroughly outweighed by the cons.

    Genetically Modified Babies
There are a lot of benefits by using genetically modify technology in agriculture, livestock industry, or even pregnancy. However, there is a lot of controversy about using genetically modify technology for pregnancy. Advocators said that by using this technology, humans don't need to worry about diseases. Such as cancer, or AIDS. On the other hand, objectors oppose the idea because during genetically modifying process, it can cause side effects to infants. Causes such as imbalance intelligent or physical abilities. In my perspective, this technology has high potential to affect beneficially in future, if people can manage well. To obtain these advantages, government should invest for research. From this research, scientist can use this information to prevent side effects.

  18. Genetically modified babies is a series of experimentation that is consistent to the changing times of the world. It is the enhancement of embryos and fetuses through the process of extraction, in order to replace growing, natural cells with other compatible cells. People do this to “enhance”, “help”, “change” and “create” there own conception of what there child, there offspring, there next generation should be. This level of science is not only wrong, but it is disgustingly selfish, inexcusably unethical and it is the sacrifice of ones new and unknown life for the conception of ones own self thought hierarchy of what life should and shouldn’t entail. Genetically modified babies is a topic that I could aggressively tare down, time and time again with different approaches for each ignorant and selfish tool who thinks that he or she has any understanding of what is a child “needs to be like”, “what is helpful”, “what is in there best interest”. but for the sake of making others look like fools in a world they will never do good in, I will just say this. You who find any good in this, have lost the will to hope, the practice of faith (in whatever degree), the trust in humanity, and the ability to let God in all his glory be sovereign. “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:13-16)

Being Christian can sway ones opinion. About god creating everyone in his image and that go is the only one that can and should control what and who you are. Using this way of thinking is great and highly respect here but out in the real world people aren't as understanding all they want are the facts. The fact is that even though it is extremely risky in so many ways that it shouldn't probably even be an option ,but to be blunt society now and days don't really care. If they want a pretty baby they will either force it after their born or during. Have you seen those shows of little kids getting dressed up and the parents going wacko like the were herding a prize pig or look that's my daughter isn't she just like a little doll. Parents these days can get away with acting like this because of media and we encourage it by watching. Yes it can possibly help with disorders or other diseases but it can also damage a families relationship. If a parent cant except a child born with defects those people probably should be having kids in the first place. A persons rights are their owns weather
their born or still in the process. Their personalities, looks, intelligence, and even disease are theirs and its societies job to make them welcome not shun them away so parents start trying to control god beauty. it is wrong to design your own baby.

  20. While this may be able to prevent disease, it opens it up for so much more. God did not give us human bodies so we could play God. God gave us human bodies so we could be human. God made us in his likeness, who are we to change that? I think it is wrong. I see why people who are not Christian would think this is okay, but I am not blinded by worldly views on this and see the truth that God would want. Or so I think. We do not have the right, or any justifications as Christians to try to change the LORD's decisions on how we are to be. It is in his plan, leave it to him.

Genetically Modified Babies (Designer Babies) are a hot topic of discussion. It is a constant battle between what people consider to be "ethical" and furthering our medical research. The name "Designer Babies" is misleading. A Designer Baby doesn't necessarily mean the baby has been modified on the outside, to have a certain eye color, hair color, height or athletic ability. Genetically modifying a baby while it is still developing in the embryo can cure genetic defects such as Down Syndrome, Alzheimers and other genetic diseases. It is estimated that, a baby that has been genetically modified may live up to thirty years more than non-genetically modified babies. As for morals and ethics, the main argument is that humans are in no place to "play God". Don't humans already play God by taking medicine? Medicine is human made and it is made for our convenience, to make us feel better and hopefully heal us. Additionally, humans have the opportunity to further scientific research! Who knows what other doors can be unlocked by furthering scientific research. Designer babies may not seem like the most ethical or moral option to take when having a baby, but if humans take a look at the bigger picture, they will see the gains and advantages outweigh the negatives.
